u-Matrasi
A mattress is always placed on the floor in an empty room, usually in the deceased’s family home. The close female relatives of the deceased will occupy this room until the funeral. It is a space where relatives and the community come to comfort and share their condolences with the bereaved family.
i-Tshali
i-Tshali is a symbolic blanket worn by the close female relatives of the deceased. They are clothed with these blankets, leading up to and during the funeral, as a sign of respect for the deceased.
